About the Township

The primary role of the elected servants (often referred to as elected officials) in Little Rock Township is to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Illinois. Upon taking office, they swear or affirm an oath to faithfully perform their duties on behalf of The People of Little Rock Township.

Little Rock Township, located in Kendall County, Illinois, encompasses a 6-mile square area (with a small adjustment at the southeast corner due to the Fox River) and serves a growing community. Administered primarily from Plano, Illinois—the largest settlement within the township—the township is governed by an elected Town Board consisting of a Supervisor and four Trustees, along with separately elected servants including the Assessor, Clerk, and Highway Commissioner.

By Illinois statute, townships are required to provide three core services:

 - General Assistance Program: This provides immediate, temporary aid to qualifying destitute residents based on local standards, needs, and available township funds. It offers essential support during times of hardship, helping individuals and families meet basic needs.

 - Property Assessment: Conducted by the elected Township Assessor, this ensures accurate and equitable valuation of real property. Proficient assessments promote fair tax levies that benefit all local governments (including schools, county, and others), resulting in more equitable property taxes for homeowners and landowners in Little Rock Township.

- Maintenance of Township Roads and Bridges: The Township Highway Commissioner oversees the upkeep, repair, and maintenance of township roads and bridges, ensuring safe and reliable transportation infrastructure for residents and travelers throughout the township.

In addition to these mandated services, Little Rock Township offers other community-focused functions, such as cemetery maintenance and local governance decisions that reflect the will of the people (often referred to as residents), including recent efforts to protect local zoning authority and maintain The People's voice concerning community character.

Through these essential services and dedicated local servitude, Little Rock Township works to support those who reside within the township, maintain fiscal responsibility, and preserve the quality of life in this vibrant part of Kendall County. For specific inquiries, assistance applications, or further details, The People are encouraged to contact township offices directly by utilizing the listed email address(s) or listed phone number(s).

Our Logo

The Story Behind the Little Rock Township Logo:

Honoring Our Roots, Our Land, and Our People

Little Rock Township is proud to share our new logo—a thoughtful design that captures the heart and heritage of our community. Created to reflect who we are and where we came from, the logo serves as a daily reminder of our shared history, natural beauty, and the township government that was built by the people, for the people.

At the top of the logo proudly sits the name “Little Rock Township” in bold, clear lettering. Across the bottom is the date of our establishment: 1849 (specifically November 6, 1849). These simple yet powerful words anchor the design in our identity and our founding.

The background image tells the rest of the story: a beautiful sunset glowing over a mature oak tree standing tall on the edge of a farm field. Mature oak trees like this one are plentiful throughout our township, symbols of strength, longevity, and deep roots in the Illinois prairie soil. The field represents our rich agricultural heritage—the farmland that has sustained families for generations. The sunset evokes peace, promise, and the close of a productive day, reminding us of the hardworking spirit that built Little Rock Township and the bright future we continue to shape together.

What makes this logo especially meaningful is its recognition of our historical roots. Illinois townships, including ours, were founded on a simple but powerful idea: local self-government created by the people and operating with a county under township form of government. When Little Rock Township was organized in 1849 as one of Kendall County’s nine townships, it was the people themselves who embraced this form of government—close to home, responsive to local needs, and grounded in the principles of a Republic, that the people know best how to care for their own communities. Our logo honors that legacy: township government was not handed down from above; it was chosen and built by the people of Kendall County.

A Few Additional Facts About Little Rock Township

We are located in beautiful Kendall County, Illinois, and cover nearly a full 6-mile square (35.44 square miles total), with the southeast corner gently shaped by the Fox River.

We are named after Little Rock Creek, the waterway that flows through our land and gives our township its distinctive identity.

As of the 2020 U.S. Census, our population stands at 14,036 residents living in 4,882 homes—making us a thriving community that blends small-town charm with steady, thoughtful growth.

The City of Plano lies entirely within our boundaries (township offices are located at 611 West Main Street in Plano). We also include the eastern edge of the City of Sandwich and the unincorporated community of Little Rock.

U.S. Route 34 runs right through the heart of the township, giving residents easy access to everything the region has to offer while we preserve our scenic rural landscapes and productive farmland.

Like all Illinois townships, we have an elected township board (supervisor and four trustees) along with an assessor, clerk, and highway commissioner, which are governed by the constitution, and ultimately by the people of the township. Our focus remains steadfast: upholding the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions while supporting families, businesses, and the high quality of life that makes Little Rock Township a wonderful place to call home.

This logo is more than a picture—it is a visual promise. It says that no matter how much our community grows, we will always honor the oak-strong roots our pioneers planted in 1849, the land that feeds us, and the people-powered government that keeps us strong.

We invite all of the people of Little Rock Township to embrace this symbol. It belongs to all of us—past, present, and future. Together, we continue to carry on with what our founders began: building a community rooted in history, rich in natural beauty, and guided by the simple truth that we the people shape our own destiny.
